Chi Chi wins Juvenile Fillies Sprint, Squints ($58.20) takes Juvenile Sprint

Chi Chi remained unbeaten in stakes company and unbeaten on dirt Saturday when she darted to a 2 3/4-length win over Hepburn in the $60,000 Juvenile Fillies Sprint at Gulfstream Park.

It was another three-quarters of a length back in third to Miss Sayely.

The Juvenile Fillies Sprint shared a card with the Juvenile Sprint, which was upset by Squints ($58.20). Both races were run at 6 1/2 furlongs and were restricted to 2-year-olds bred in Florida.

Chi Chi ($3.20) was the 3-5 favorite one start after winning at the distance last out in the $50,000 E.L. Gaylord Memorial on Sept. 24 at Remington Park. It was her first start on dirt after finishing fourth in a maiden special weight on turf at Del Mar. She is now based at Gulfstream.

Chi Chi broke well from the rail and sat just off the pace set by Avellino, who took the field through an opening quarter in 22.91 seconds. The leader was joined by several others through a half-mile in 45.84 and the four-wide wall of horses moved into the stretch together. Chi Chi accelerated through an opening between horses and went on to a clear win, covering the distance in 1:18.44.

Edwin Gonzalez was aboard for trainer Herman Wilensky.

Chi Chi is a daughter of Audible who races for Ernest Frohboese. She is a half-sister to Grade 2 winner Simplification. Chi Chi is now 2 for 4 for earnings of $71,840.

Squints rushed up the rail in the later stages for a 1 3/4-length win over Sound of the Beast in the Juvenile Sprint. It was another length back in third to Big Effect.

Squints raced off fractions of 22.37 for the opening quarter and 45.50 for the half-mile. He went on to cover the distance on a fast track in 1:17.56.

Hector Diaz Jr. was aboard for trainer Kelly Breen.

Squints came into the Juvenile Sprint off a seventh-place finish in the Affirmed division of the Florida Sire Stakes in October at Gulfstream. He was a debut winner at the track in September.

Squints is a son of Khozan who races for Screen Door Stables. He is a half-brother to Grade 3 Longacres Mile winner Background. Squints is now 2 for 3 for earnings of $94,280.

Khozeiress ($18.60) put in a sustained run for a length win over West Coast Cowboy in the $60,000 Awesome Banner. It was another nose back in third to Dreaming of Kona.

West Coast Cowboy and Dreaming of Kona were the 122-pound co-highweights in the overnight handicap for 3-year-olds in which Khozeiress carried 119.

Khozeiress unleashed a strong bid on the turn of the seven-furlong race, came four wide into the stretch, and persevered to the wire while covering the distance in 1:23.20.

Leonel Reyes was aboard for trainer Terri Pompay.

Khozeiress is a son of Khozan who races for his breeder, My Purple Haze Stables.

*** The Rainbow 6 jackpot was hit Saturday at Gulfstream Park for $136,285, according to a press release. The 20-cent bet had not been solved for seven cards. The winning numbers were 3-8-2-7-7-7.
