Chart gets head down at right time to win Ontario Colleen

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Chart came wide under Justin Stein to edge out even-money favorite Avie’s Samurai in Saturday’s Grade 3, $130,000 Ontario Colleen Stakes at Woodbine.
Chart, one of four entrants for trainer Mark Casse in the one-mile turf event, stalked pacesetter Two Sixty until that one began to tire in the final furlong. Avie’s Samurai made a bid along the rail from fourth in unison with Chart, who nailed the bob perfectly in a head victory.

The Casse-trained Diamond Sparkles finished a close third. She was followed Two Sixty, Saratoga Vision and Fly So Pretty. Morning-line favorite Walk In Marrakesh was scratched.
“She broke sharp, and I didn’t have to ask her to leave there,” Stein said. “She settled into stride right away and just galloped around there until it was time to really start running. I got to sit and wait for a while. I was pretty comfy sitting up to the quarter pole, and when I asked to run, she really kicked. Running into that headwind, she found more to get the job done.”
In her first start on turf, Chart ($11.20) covered the distance in 1:35.24. The daughter of Lea earned $75,000 for D J Stable.
