Charmaine's Mia pointed to Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, if she can get in

ARCADIA, Calif. – Charmaine’s Mia, a three-time stakes winner at Santa Anita earlier this year who has lost her last three races, will start in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint on Nov. 6 at Del Mar, if she can gain a place in what is expected to be an oversubscribed field.
Trainer Phil D’Amato said Sunday that the BC Turf Sprint would be Charmaine’s Mia’s final start for owners Agave Racing, Medallion Racing, and Rockin Robin Racing Stables. A 5-year-old mare by The Factor, Charmaine’s Mia is scheduled to be sold as a racing or broodmare prospect at the November breeding stock sale at Keeneland on Nov. 10.
“She’ll be out the door the next day,” D’Amato said.
The BC Turf Sprint is run at five furlongs and will have a maximum of 12 starters, but has a list of candidates longer than that.

Earlier this year, Charmaine’s Mia won her first three starts for D’Amato, all in stakes, including two Grade 2 races at a mile on turf – the Buena Vista Stakes in February and the Royal Heroine Stakes in April.
Charmaine’s Mia was sixth in the Grade 1 Gamely Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on turf in May and sixth in the Grade 2 Yellow Ribbon Handicap at 1 1/16 miles on turf at Del Mar in August.
Charmaine’s Mia finished eighth by 3 3/4 lengths in the Grade 2 Eddie D Stakes at about 6 1/2 furlongs on the hillside turf course on Oct. 1 at Santa Anita. Charmaine’s Mia set the pace, but faded through the final furlong.
A winner of 7 of 31 starts, Charmaine’s Mia was acquired last fall privately from owner and trainer Michael McDonald, who raced the mare in Canada and Florida in 2020.
D’Amato said if Charmaine’s Mia is not selected for the BC Turf Sprint field that an alternative is the $200,000 Sen. Ken Maddy Stakes for fillies and mares at five furlongs on turf on Nov. 5 at Del Mar. The Maddy is on the undercard of the first day of Breeders’ Cup races.
