Charles Town Oaks runner-up Free Like a Girl works for stakes at Delta Downs
Free Like a Girl, who last month ran second in the Grade 3 Charles Town Oaks, worked a bullet half-mile Thursday in her first move out of the race. Trainer Chasey Deville-Pomier said the 3-year-old filly is headed for the $100,000 Magnolia at her base of Delta Downs.
The seven-furlong race is for Louisiana-bred fillies and mares and it will be run around two turns on the six-furlong track at Delta.
Free Like a Girl worked Thursday at Delta Downs, going in 48 seconds. The move was the fastest of 27 at the distance. Free Like a Girl is now based at Delta. Deville-Pomier co-owns the filly with Gerald Bruno Jr., Carl Deville and Jerry Caroom.

Free Like a Girl last faced both Louisiana-breds and older rivals on Aug. 6, and powered to a 6 1/2-length win in the $60,000 Louisiana Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Louisiana Downs. She earned a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 88 in a performance that sent her to Charles Town.
Free Like a Girl was always prominent in the Charles Town Oaks, while finishing 6 3/4 lengths behind winner Society. Society popped a Beyer of 100 while improving her career record to 4 for 5 for earnings of more than $500,000.
Deville-Pomier was pleased with the performance from Free Like a Girl, who earned a Beyer of 87.
“We were definitely proud of her effort,” she said. “We couldn’t have asked her for any more. Society is a monster filly.”
Free Like a Girl is a monster Louisiana-bred. She’s 8 for 16 in her career, with seven of those wins coming in stakes. Overall, Free Like a Girl has earned $562,128.
