Charles Town: Davis has the numbers

Joe DeVivo|Mar 22, 2012

Trainer Scooter Davis has the numbers stacked in his favor for the semifinals of the Charles Town Starter Tournament on Saturday night.

Davis has three runners, including Pure Rey, an easy winner in his quarter-final heat, for the first of two $30,000 races at seven furlongs and Disco Indy, a six-time winner in 2011, for the second division. That gives Davis four shots among the 17 horses vying for 10 spots in the finals.

The top five finishers in Saturday’s seventh and eighth races will stretch out to 1 1/16 miles for the $55,000 championship on Charles Town Classic Night, April 14.

The nine-horse first heat also includes quarter-final winner Cape Finisterre, who drew the rail, two slots inside of Pure Rey, a hand-ridden 3 3/4-length winner making his first start off a $5,000 claim. Davis will also start Run Fat Boy Run, second as the even-money favorite behind Cape Finisterre, and Etched in Stone, third behind Pure Rey and Letthebigtimesroll.

The eight-horse second semifinal features Albrecht and Azicharmyou, who finished noses apart as the one-two finishers in their quarterfinal heat three weeks ago. Disco Indy was just a length behind in third that night.
