Charles leaves TOC post

Ron Charles has resigned as the chairman of the Thoroughbred Owners of California, ending a leadership role with the organization that began in 1993.

Charles informed the owners group's board of his decision at its monthly meeting on Thursday. He said Friday that he resigned to pursue other opportunities, but declined to reveal his plans.

Jack Owens was elected chairman at Thursday's meeting. An owner-breeder from Modesto, Owens served as chairman from 2001-03.

Charles said he will continue to race in California.

Charles was a founding member of the TOC, was vice-president when the organization gained the status as the state's official representative for horsemen, and was vice-chairman from 2001 to 2003.
