Chapalu takes them all the way in Grey Stakes

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – The promising Chapalu justified his favoritism with a gate-to-wire score in Sunday’s Grade 3 Grey Stakes for 2-year-olds at Woodbine.
After breaking from post 7, Chapalu inherited the lead in the 1 1/16-mile event. He proceeded to set honest fractions, with another Maryland shipper, Torres Del Paine, chasing in second.
Chapalu had a clear lead entering the stretch and then began to tire late, but managed to hold on for a half-length tally in a time of 1:44.50.
Muskoka Gold rallied wide from far back on his left lead to beat out longshot Lookinatamiracle by a half-length for second in the nine-horse field.
Patrick Husbands rode Chapalu for trainer Arnaud Delacour. The son of Flatter was coming off a second-out maiden victory on the grass at Keeneland.
“He left there pretty sharp,” Husbands said. “I looked [around] and nobody else wanted the lead, so I just took advantage of it. I watched his two races. Last time, he was a little bit rank on the first turn, and he relaxed the rest of the race. Coming into this race, I was on the outside, so I just wanted to give him an easy trip.”
Chapalu earned $75,000 of the $130,900 purse for owners Edward Seltzer and Beverly Anderson.
