Chapa hurt in Lone Star spill

Mary Rampellini|May 13, 2006

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Jockey Roman Chapa sustained a broken collarbone in the seventh race Friday night at Lone Star Park when his mount, Substantiate, broke down in the stretch.

The incident caused two other riders, Omar Rodriguez and Benito Morales, to be thrown from their mounts. Rodriguez and Morales both escaped serious injury, according to officials with Lone Star.

Chapa was transported to Methodist Hospital in Dallas. Substantiate was vanned off the track. He threw Chapa when he fell approaching the sixteenth polel. Substantiate got back up and hit oncoming horses Gray Zephyros, ridden by Morales, and Valid Echo, ridden by Rodriguez.

Chapa is the fourth-leading rider at Lone Star.
