Champion juvenile colt Golden Boi fastest qualifier for El Primero Del Ano Derby

Steve Andersen|Mar 07, 2022

Golden Boi, the 2021 Quarter Horse champion 2-year-old colt, won his first start since October in a division of the El Primero Del Ano Derby time trials at Los Alamitos on Sunday, setting the fastest qualifying time for the $215,000 final on March 27.

Trained by Valentin Zamudio for M&G Farms, Golden Boi ran 400 yards in 19.62 seconds, winning the third and final trial by two lengths over Insider Information, who was timed in 20.03 seconds and qualified for the final.

The 10 fastest times from the three trials earned berths in the final.

Golden Boi was ridden by Ruben Lozano. Last year, Golden Boi won the Ed Burke Million Futurity in June, and was the fastest qualifier for the Golden State Million Futurity in November but missed the race because of illness.

Following the Golden State Million Futurity, Whizkey Glasses was third in the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity in December.

The first trial was won by Watch Out, who was second in the Governor’s Cup Futurity last July and fifth in the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity. Watch Out was timed in 19.98 seconds.

Other qualifiers are Favorite Honey, Rocket Seventeen, Knockout Cartel, Tip Ofmy Tongue, and Hallelujah Nights.

* Saturday, Jess Dream of Me, sixth in the $3 million All American Futurity at Ruidoso Downs last September, set the fastest qualifying time for the $438,500 Los Alamitos Oaks on March 26.

Ridden by Cruz Mendez for trainer Jose Flores, Jess Dream of Me ran 400 yards in 19.78 seconds, finishing a half-length in front of Sweet Tess, who also earned a berth in the final. First Fast Honey, who won the Kindergarten Futurity last May, finished third in a time fast enough to qualify.

There were four trials for the Los Alamitos Oaks, with all the winners qualifying for the final. La Beverly Hills ($78) was the surprise winner of the second trial, finishing in 19.86 seconds. Majority Interest (19.91 seconds) and She Goes Up (19.93) won the final two divisions.

The other qualifiers are Chrissy Ledoux, Sweet Dasha Fire, Call It Close, and Unavailable.
