ARCADIA, Calif. – Friday was another busy morning for Breeders’ Cup candidates at Santa Anita. For the next two weeks, it will stay that way. Indications are that most California-based trainers are likely to stay at Santa Anita for final workouts by Breeders’ Cup candidates and ship late to Del Mar for Breeders’ Cup races on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 3-4. “They’ll get a chance to gallop over the [Del Mar] track Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday” during Breeders’ Cup week, trainer Peter Eurton said Friday after Champagne Room worked a bullet half-mile at Santa Anita. Champagne Room worked in 47 seconds under Mario Gutierrez, the fastest half-mile of the day by two-fifths of a second. “I knew she was going to be frisky,” Eurton said. “She’s always been that kind of horse, and her gallop-out was just as good.” Champagne Room, upset winner of the 2016 BC Juvenile Fillies, won her recent comeback and is aiming to the BC Distaff. Bill Spawr worked BC Filly and Mare Sprint contender Skye Diamonds five furlongs Friday. The mare wanted to do more. Skye Diamonds worked in 1:02.40 under Tiago Pereira and kept running into the backstretch. “My pony guy had to pick her up there,” trainer Bill Spawr said, pointing toward the half-mile pole. “She went the first quarter in 26 and 4, the last quarter in 24 and 2, and she kept going.” Spawr said Skye Diamonds will remain at Santa Anita for her final two workouts and ship late to Del Mar. Skye Diamonds has won four of her last five starts, including the Grade 3 Rancho Bernardo in her most recent start Aug. 13 at Del Mar. The Bob Baffert-trained Faithfully worked a half-mile in 48.40; her BC Distaff status is unconfirmed. “I’m on the fence with her,” Baffert said. “We’ll see how it shapes up.” The Grade 2 Chilukki Stakes on Nov. 4 at Churchill Downs is a possibility if Faithfully does not run in the Distaff. On Friday, Baffert was weighing the pros and cons of keeping his Breeders’ Cup contenders at Santa Anita for final workouts or shipping early. “I’m trying to decide when I’m going to go down to Del Mar – do I go before, or do I wait until the last minute?” Del Mar is open for training Oct. 23. Regardless of location, Baffert noted: “Every work now is going to count.” Richard Mandella worked Paradise Woods and Avenge minutes apart Friday at Santa Anita, the first work for both since Grade 1 victories Sept. 30. Flavien Prat worked Zenyatta Stakes winner Paradise Woods five furlongs in 1:01. Mandella said the work was designed to “just get started back. I didn’t want her popping her eyeballs out, just trying to get her to relax a little bit. She won’t need any big stuff.” Paradise Woods is among the leading contenders for the BC Distaff. Avenge won the Rodeo Drive Stakes and is targeting the BC Filly and Mare Turf. She worked Friday in 1:00.60. “They both had their races, so we’re just trying to maintain them,” Mandella said of Paradise Woods and Avenge. “They both came out great.” Mopotism, a longshot for the BC Distaff, worked five furlongs in 1:00.60 for trainer Doug O’Neill. Kobe’s Back posted the fastest six-furlong workout Friday, 1:12.60, under Gutierrez. A sprinter for most of his career, Kobe’s Back will stretch out to one mile around two turns in the $70,000 Comma to the Top Stakes on Oct. 28.
