OKLAHOMA CITY – The champion Champagne Room was bright and alert Monday, the morning after her win in the $200,000 Remington Park Oaks, and she could be headed next to the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Trainer Peter Eurton said Monday the Nov. 3 race at Del Mar is strong possibility for Champagne Room, who won last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. She also had been under consideration for the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint. “If everything goes really well, we’d like to do the Distaff,” said Eurton, adding that discussions are still ongoing with the partnership that owns Champagne Room. Champagne Room earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 92 for the Remington Park Oaks, a 1 1/16-mile race she won in a stakes-record time of 1:42.05. She led throughout in what was her first start since February. She was away from the races after having a bone chip removed from an ankle. Champagne Room ran a powerful race in her return, winning in hand Sunday. “She was fitter than I probably thought she was,” Eurton said, “and I think I attribute that to the way she gallops. She gallops so strong. If you get a horse that goes out there and just walks through the morning gallops and doesn’t get a lot out of it, then you tend to rely more on your breezes. I didn’t really have that many into her to go a mile and a sixteenth and ship, so she gets a lot out of her morning training. “We’re leaning toward the Distaff because of the way she runs two turns and her stamina.” Eurton said Champagne Room was to fly back to Santa Anita on Monday. The trip to Remington marked her first start outside of Southern California. “She’s a great shipper – I learned that for sure,” Eurton said. “She shipped into her stall and all she wanted to do was eat. So that’s always a good sign – with a filly, especially.” Champagne Room was the first Eclipse Award champion to win a race at Remington, which opened in 1988.
