Chaching Pete ticks all the boxes
Chaching Pete looks like the one to beat in a $10,000 starter-allowance race that headlines an eight-race card at Emerald Downs on Friday. The six-furlong sprint for 3-year-olds and up drew nine horses, and the shape of the race should work in Chaching Pete’s favor. Post time for the first of eight races is 6:45 p.m. Pacific, with the feature going as race 7.
Trained by Bill Tollett, Chaching Pete was an easy winner for $5,000 on Aug. 21 at Emerald, and he came back with another big effort, narrowly missing to Hastings-based Lornefivehundred in a $10,000 claiming race Sept. 7. Lornefivehundred has won 16 races and earned $216,016. Other than Chaching Pete, who also has won 16 times, none of the horses in the field has the same kind of credentials.
In his last two starts, Chaching Pete came from a stalking position, and with plenty of speed lined up, he should get a similar trip after he breaks from post 7 with Javier Gutierrez retaining the mount.
Advancement is the speed of the speed and could be dangerous if he can clear early. Trained by Robert Baze, he won back-to-back races for $5,000 and $10,000 on June 21 and July 12 before chasing Dare Me Devil in his next two starts. Dare Me Devil repeated in a $25,000 claiming race last Sunday.
KEY CONTENDERS
Chaching Pete (Last 3 Beyers: 71-76-56)
◗ He is coming off two solid efforts, knows how to win races, and should get the perfect trip stalking what figures to be a fast and contested pace.
Advancement (Last 3 Beyers: 42-60-74)
◗ He will appreciate the class relief after fading in his latest.
Hoody (Last 3 Beyers: 67-65-52)
◗ The Jim Penney-trained 4-year-old is trending in the right direction and is capable of stalking the pace.
◗ Next to Chaching Pete, he owns the best last-race Beyer Speed Figure, which he received for his runner-up finish in a $12,500 conditional claimer Aug. 30. The horse who finished third in that race came back to win a $7,500 conditional-claiming race last Friday.
Mister Breeze (Last 3 Beyers: 65-61-60)
◗ He looked good winning a $5,000 claiming race going five furlongs Aug. 23, improving his Beyer for the third straight race.
◗ Trained by Alan Bozell, he also can stalk the pace, but it is hard to say what kind of trip he will get from the inside post.
