Cedillo in right place at right time
Jockey Abel Cedillo found himself in the right place at the right time – at the wire aboard Amnesia in Saturday’s Wine Country Stakes at Santa Rosa and again on Sing and Tell in the Luther Burbank Handicap on Sunday.
But Cedillo and his mount weren’t where they expected to be early in the Wine Country, for 3-year-old fillies.
Amnesia’s Hall of Fame trainer, Neil Drysdale, expected the filly to be forwardly placed and then wanted Cedillo to angle her out to the clear down the backstretch. Instead, Cedillo found himself tucked inside in midpack. He wound up with a perfect trip when a path opened for him along the rail.
On Sunday, he was able to follow Plan A for trainer Holly Evans and put the speedy Sing and Tell on the lead. Despite pace pressure, Sing and Tell had enough left to hold off the millionaire Halo Dolly and the Drysdale-trained Freedom Reigns, giving Cedillo a weekend stakes double.
