Jockey Carol Cedeno is expected to miss two to three months after being unseated during a race at Meadowlands Racetrack last weekend. She required surgery to treat a fracture in her left wrist and suffered several minor fractures in her back, but she is expected to make a full recovery.   Cedeno was aboard Micro Brewsky in the fourth race at Meadowlands on Sept. 27 when the 5-year-old gelding briefly took the lead in the stretch before stumbling badly. He was taken off the track in an equine ambulance and was later euthanized, per trainer Derek Ryan.  When Cedeno was unseated, she fell in the path of oncoming horses and was stepped on twice, once across her back and once on her wrist. She made an encouraging thumbs-up gesture as she was being assisted off the track, but her mind was elsewhere.  “I have kids. I was thinking about them,” Cedeno said. “At one point, I was thinking that day was my last day riding horses.” :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! She avoided a severe injury to her back and did not require surgery for the minor fractures. A follow-up in two weeks will clarify her timetable to return.  “I was worried because they found five fractures in my back, and I was worried about it because they didn’t know if they had to do surgery,” Cedeno said. “But then when they came back, they told me that they’re small [fractures] in the lower back. That made me feel better because I don't really want surgery on my back. They did the surgery on my wrist and everything came out good. I'm in pain, but I'm okay.”  Cedeno complained that she was slow to respond to people over the phone because she could not use her left hand, but it did nothing to stop an outpouring of support from the racing community. A GoFundMe campaign created on Sept. 28 has raised more than $14,000 to assist with Cedeno’s medical costs. Owner Chas Blanford, who frequently works with Cedeno, donated $1,000 toward that total.  Despite fears that her injuries would keep her out of the saddle for good, Cedeno intends to return after several months of recovery. Since traveling from Puerto Rico to ride in the Mid-Atlantic region in 2007, the rider has become a popular figure on the circuit.   In 10,242 starts, Cedeno has earned 1,414 wins and nearly $37 million in purse money. At Delaware, her home track since 2014, she has earned 673 wins in 4,006 starts. In Thoroughbred racing, she has won 16 listed stakes and most recently guided Prince of Jericho to victory in the $100,000 Spectacular Bid at Laurel Park in 2023. She also guided turf sprinter Witty to three stakes victories early in his career.  Cedeno has won nine graded Arabian stakes races, including the 2022 and 2025 editions of the Grade 1 UAE President’s Cup at Pimlico.   :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
