Jockey Carol Cedeno’s career has taken a lot of twists and turns since she came to the United States from her native Puerto Rico in 2007. She came to the United States after winning her fifth race, and officially beginning her apprenticeship, at Hipodromo Camarero. She started out at Parx Racing; had a successful stint in New York – she is 42 for 416 at Aqueduct; married fellow rider Angel Serpa, and had two children, Angelika and Dylan. In August 2013, she fractured vertebrae in a spill at Penn National, which sidelined her until last February. Cedeno, still only 26, recently won her first meet title at Delaware Park, where she won 44 Thoroughbred races and six on Arabians. “I was very excited to win the title,” Cedeno said. “It is my first, and I really wanted it.” The key to Cedeno’s success at Delaware was teaming up with Juan Vazquez, who won 49 races and his third Delaware Park training title. Cedeno and Vazquez went 27 for 114 together, a 24 percent win average. “I called Juan and asked if I came to Delaware if he would put me on some of his horses,” Cedeno said. “He said he would help me out and put me on some but not all. After we had some wins together, he started putting me on more and more.” With the Delaware meet over, Cedeno is riding throughout the Mid-Atlantic, with an emphasis on Laurel Park. She has won at Penn National and Laurel in the last week. Rather than go to Tampa Bay Downs this winter, Cedeno and her agent, Mario Gendrachi, plan to stay in the Northeast and continue riding for Vazquez’s stable.
