Cedar Hill breaks fast on way to 13-1 upset in Kindergarten Futurity

Capitalizing on his experience, the 2-year-old gelding Cedar Hill parlayed a sharp start into an upset win in Sunday’s $245,200 Robert Adair Kindergarten Futurity at Los Alamitos, the track’s first major race of the year for juveniles.

While many of the runners had one or two starts in recent weeks at Los Alamitos, Cedar Hill had his fourth race of the young season in the Kindergarten at 300 yards.

Owned by James Sills and Abel Flores, Cedar Hill was second in a time trial for the Oklahoma Futurity at Remington Park in his debut March 9, and finished last of 10 in the $50,000 Oklahoma Juvenile on March 23, the consolation of the $502,385 Oklahoma Futurity.

In his debut at Los Alamitos, Cedar Hill won a division of the Kindergarten trials on April 21. The victory did not impress bettors, who sent the gelding off at 13-1 on Sunday.

At the start of the Kindergarten, Cedar Hill was quickly in front, holding an advantage of three-quarters of a length after 100 yards. The early lead propelled Cedar Hill ($29.80) to a neck win over 7-2 My Budd, who finished well.

Play Misty (3-1) finished third, beaten a half-length. Fear N Fridays, the fastest qualifier from the time trials and the 5-2 favorite, finished ninth in the abbreviated race after a troubled start.

Cedar Hill was timed in 15.43 seconds and earned $107,604. Trained by Eddie Willis, Cedar Hill has earned $113,832.

Willis has a division at Los Alamitos but is based in Oklahoma where Cedar Hill is expected to race later this year.
