ARCADIA, Calif. - The California 2-year-olds Cave Rock and Wound Up have had widely different campaigns this year. Cave Rock is unbeaten in three starts, including two Grade 1 stakes. Wound Up won his debut in a maiden special weight race on turf, but has since finished sixth and fifth in turf stakes. They may appear in the same race on Nov. 4 - the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at 1 1/16 miles at Keeneland. On Sunday at Santa Anita, Cave Rock worked six furlongs in 1:11.20, his second workout since an easy win by 5 1/4 lengths in the Grade 1 American Pharoah Stakes at 1 1/16 miles at Santa Anita on Oct. 8. “I wanted to get a strong work out of him,” trainer Bob Baffert said. :: Get ready for Santa Anita racing with DRF PPs, Clocker Reports, Picks, and more. Wound Up will be a longshot for owners Paul and Zillah Reddam and trainer Michael McCarthy, if he starts in the BC Juvenile. McCarthy said on Sunday that Wound Up will be pre-entered on Monday in the BC Juvenile Turf Sprint and the Juvenile, with the Juvenile Turf Sprint as a first preference. Because the Juvenile Turf Sprint is expected to oversubscribe, the Juvenile is a back-up option, he said. Wound Up finished seventh in the Del Mar Juvenile Turf at a mile on Sept. 11 and was promoted to sixth after a rival was disqualified for causing interference in the stretch. Wound Up was fifth by 2 3/4 lengths in the Speakeasy Stakes at 5 1/2 furlongs on turf at Santa Anita on Oct. 2, but had an unlucky trip when he broke slowly and raced in traffic. Despite those incidents, Wound Up recovered to finish closest to the front at the wire. A start on dirt will be new for Wound Up. “He trained well on the track at Del Mar and I think the two are similar, surface-wise,” McCarthy said. Baffert and McCarthy each have five Breeders’ Cup candidates. Aside from Wound Up, McCarthy plans to start Uncontrollable (Juvenile Fillies), Smooth Like Strait (Mile), Master Piece (Turf), and Ce Ce (Filly and Mare Sprint). Baffert’s team includes National Treasure (Juvenile), Speed Boat Beach (Juvenile Turf Sprint), Taiba (Classic) and Laurel River (Dirt Mile). National Treasure, second in the American Pharoah in his stakes debut, worked five furlongs in 1:01.20 on Sunday. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
