HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – The Gulfstream Park Championship meet doesn’t start for another three weeks. Todd Pletcher has dominated the meet for as long as one can remember. But the Hall of Fame trainer did not wait for the winter session to kick in before starting to throw his weight around locally. Pletcher will enter this weekend’s action having sent out six winners from 19 starters during the current meet. He figures to add to that total when he saddles a pair of key contenders, including likely favorite Causin’ Mayhem, in Saturday’s $71,000 allowance feature at a mile on the turf. Causin’ Mayhem returns locally for the first time since he launched his career finishing second by a neck to Riot House on turf in March. After winning his maiden at second asking in a race taken off the grass and decided over a muddy strip nearly three months later at Belmont Park, Causin’ Mayhem shipped to Woodbine where he finished third in the Plate Trial and 10th following a wide trip in the Queen’s Plate. :: DRF Bets members get FREE DRF Past Performances - Formulator or Classic. Causin’ Mayhem finally got back on the grass in his most recent outing, running fourth while beaten less than a length by subsequent Grade 2 winner Celestial City under entry-level allowance conditions at Aqueduct on Sept. 24. He has been well prepared for his return, having posted six works at Palm Beach Downs, including a near-bullet five furlongs on Nov. 25. Causin’ Mayhem, who has been gelded since his previous start, will be ridden by Edgard Zayas and will be joined in the starting gate by stablemate Red Line Overdrive, who makes his turf debut after posting a game maiden win over the Tapeta track here on Oct. 22. A full field of 12 plus one also-eligible was drawn for Saturday’s headliner, including northern invaders Coleridge, News Break, and Red Hornet. Coleridge earned his diploma here in January in his second start, then went to the sidelines for more than eight months before returning to finish a solid fourth despite a slow start and wide trip going a mile under allowance conditions at Keeneland on Oct. 12. Coleridge figures to improve off the career best 82 Beyer Speed Figure he earned that day, but will have to overcome post 11. News Break has been away nearly 14 months but has been working bullets over the main track at Ellis Park for trainer Mike Maker. News Break posted five Beyer Speed Figures in the mid-80s within a seven-month span in 2021, which makes him very competitive in this spot if he doesn’t need a race off the bench. Red Hornet is another with the Beyer firepower to compete with this group at his best. Red Hornet outran his 44-1 odds when finishing sixth while beaten just a length and one-half against a strong field of second-level allowance foes at Keeneland on Oct. 21 and figures to sit a nice stalking trip making his South Florida debut with Chantal Sutherland aboard. Hopefully the weather will be better Saturday than it was here Thursday, when intermittent showers forced management to cancel turf racing. The three scheduled grass events on the card were to have been the first over the newly renovated course since mid-June. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
