Cathy's Star vs. 'Miss Sandy'

Adam Goss|Jun 26, 2002

WINNIPEG, Manitoba - There will be two stakes races here this holiday weekend, beginning with Sunday's $30,000 Manitoba at one mile.

Twenty Manitoba-bred 3-year-olds have been nominated but the field will be limited to 12 starters based on earnings.

In the Monday holiday feature, the $30,000 Canada Day for fillies and mares at one mile, Cathy's Star will get another shot at last year's top local older mare, Miss Sandy Dee.

Cathy's Star finished second to Miss Sandy Dee when they met for the first time in the May 21 Victoria Day.

Miss Sandy Dee has not raced since then, while Cathy's Star won an allowance race here May 31.

Bo Dippity do!

Last Saturday, 2-year-old filly Bo Dippity made her debut a good one by winning the Frank Arnason Sire Stakes over Pippy Dance and New Release. Fancy Bru, the odds-on favorite, finished fourth.

Trained by Blair Miller and ridden by Anderson Ward, Bo Dippity returned $24.90.

Miller and Ward teamed up earlier on Saturday's card to win with 2-year-old Suntana. The wins were the first two of the year for Miller following a 0-for-19 start.

Kalfaari dominates division

Sunday, Kalfaari continued his domination of the local older male division by winning the Free Press over Kenyawin and Gus Again. Trained by Clint Willson, Kalfaari is now 3 for 3 this year with earnings of $45,600.

The win aboard Kalfaari was one of three on Sunday for Rohan Singh, who also won four races on Friday. Singh tops the local standings with 34 wins.

* Trainer Darla Singh won three races on Friday and topped all trainers here last weekend. Rita MacDonald, Tanya Lindsay, and Terry Westwood each won two races.

Ardell Sayler leads all local trainers with 14 wins.
