Catch a Flight will undergo medical test

Catch a Flight, the winner of the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap at Del Mar in July, is scheduled to undergo a nuclear scan on Tuesday to determine the cause of body soreness that kept him from a start in Saturday’s $300,000 Awesome Again Stakes at Santa Anita.
“Something is not right,” trainer Richard Mandella said. “We’ll see if the scan can tell us something that we don’t know. I don’t want to take a chance on something creeping up on him.”
Catch a Flight would have been a leading contender in the Awesome Again. An Argentine-bred, Catch a Flight was second to stablemate Beholder in the $1 million Pacific Classic at Del Mar on Aug. 22 in his most recent start.
Young Brian might return next year
Young Brian, a maiden-race winner at Del Mar who missed the Del Mar Futurity on Sept. 7 because of a sesamoid injury, might return to racing next year, trainer D’Amato said on Friday.
Young Brian sustained the injury Aug. 31 and underwent surgery this month to have a bone chip removed, D’Amato said. There is a possibility for a return to racing after a lengthy recovery.
“The surgery went well,” D’Amato said. “The injury wasn’t as bad as previously thought. They are optimistic the horse could make a comeback. He will need six to nine months. You have to forget about him and give him as long as he needs.”
D’Amato said Young Brian underwent the operation at the Alamo Pintado Equine Clinic in Los Olivos, Calif., and will be sent to a lay-up farm in the coming days. Owned by breeder John Liviakis, Young Brian beat maidens by 10 1/4 lengths at 6 1/2 furlongs on Aug. 8 in his only start.
