Catalina Cruiser works half-mile in BC Dirt Mile buildup

Catalina Cruiser, the undefeated multiple graded stakes winner, has settled into a consistent pattern of workouts this month in the buildup to an expected start in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at Churchill Downs on Nov. 3.
On Sunday at Santa Anita, Catalina Cruiser worked a half-mile in 48.20 seconds, his second workout since trainer John Sadler’s stable relocated from Del Mar to Santa Anita after Labor Day weekend.
Owned by Pete and Kosta Hronis, Catalina Cruiser is unbeaten in four starts. At Del Mar, the 4-year-old colt won two Grade 2 stakes – the San Diego Handicap by 6 3/4 lengths at 1 1/16 miles on July 21, and the Pat O’Brien Stakes by 7 1/4 lengths at seven furlongs on Aug. 25.
Also on Sunday, the 2-year-old filly Summering worked a half-mile in 48.20 seconds on the training track. Trained by Tom Proctor for Glen Hill Farm, Summering is scheduled to start in the $100,000 Surfer Girl Stakes at a mile on turf at Santa Anita on Oct. 8. Summering won the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf on Sept. 3 in her stakes debut.
There were several notable workouts Sunday. Accelerate, winner of the Grade 1 Pacific Classic on Aug. 18 for Hronis Racing and Sadler, worked five furlongs in 1:00.20 in preparation for a scheduled start in the Grade 1 Awesome Again Stakes at 1 1/8 miles at Santa Anita on Sept. 29.
Battle of Midway, the winner of the BC Dirt Mile last November at Del Mar, worked six furlongs in 1:12.60. He is scheduled to start in the Grade 2 Kelso Handicap at Belmont Park on Saturday.
Trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, Battle of Midway was second in the Pat O’Brien Stakes in his first start since a return to training in the spring. Battle of Midway was sent to stud last winter, but was found to be subfertile.
Two trainers fined
Trainers Bob Bean and Jerry Wallace have been fined for medication violations found in their runners at Los Alamitos in July.
Bean was fined $500 after Funny Bean tested in excess of the permitted level of the muscle relaxant methocarbamol after a win in a maiden special weight race in the seventh race on July 1.
Wallace was fined $1,000 after Whatyouciswhatuget, who finished third in the first race on July 12, tested in excess of the anti-inflammatory dexamethasone. This was Wallace’s second such infraction in the last year, according to a ruling.
