Castleton Lyons stallion Bernstein euthanized at age 14
Castleton Lyons announced Sunday that the farm’s 14-year-old stallion Bernstein had been euthanized due to complications from colic.
A Kentucky-bred son of Storm Cat out of the Affirmed mare La Affirmed, Bernstein was purchased for $925,000 as a weanling and raced for Michael Tabor and Mrs. John Magnier. Bernstein raced in Europe for two seasons with trainer Aidan O’Brien, winning the Group 3 Railway Stakes at the Curragh as a 2-year-old and the listed Shergar Cup Sprint at Ascot at 3.
As a stallion, Bernstein shuttled between the United States and Argentina early in his career. He sired 70 stakes winners and has progeny earnings of more than $33 million. He stood at Castleton Lyons in Lexington, Ky. for a $20,000 fee in 2011.
“Today is a very sad day for all of us on the farm as Bernstein was a very special stallion that in an all too brief career at stud has sired top class horses throughout the world, said Shane Ryan, president of Castleton Lyons.”
