Castanon set to return from injury on Sunday
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Jesus Castanon is named on two mounts Sunday at Churchill as the veteran jockey returns from a layoff forced by a tailbone injury that resulted from an Aug. 16 spill at Ellis Park. Castanon, best known for his victory on Shackleford in the 2011 Preakness, also missed eight weeks earlier this year with a similar injury.
◗ Jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. bookended the Twilight Thursday card at Churchill by winning the first two races with Lime Martini ($4.40) and Charming Talullah ($51.80) and the final race with Duty Proper ($40.20). Into Friday, Hernandez trailed only his fellow Louisianan, Corey Lanerie, atop the meet standings by a 10-8 win count.
◗ Churchill closes its 11-day September meet Sunday by hosting more than 20 children’s activities on Family Adventure Day. Two $40,200 allowances (races 6 and 9) serve as nominal features on a 10-race card. First post is 12:45 p.m. Eastern. The Kentucky circuit then goes dark for four days before Keeneland opens.
