ETOBICOKE, Ontario – After wintering in Florida, Casson returns to the scene of his Victoria Stakes triumph in Sunday’s $100,000 King Corrie Stakes at Woodbine. The Ontario-bred is one of three King’s Plate nominees in the seven-furlong test for 3-year-olds, along with Fire and Wine and Reload Raleigh. Trained by Mark Casse for Manfred and Penny Conrad, Casson was quite speedy on the Tapeta last spring and early summer, winning his 4 1/2-furlong debut and the 5 1/2-furlong Victoria. He made his next three starts in grass stakes, finishing second in the Soaring Free, sixth in the Grade 1 Summer, and second to Cy Fair in the Algonquin. On March 21, following a 5 1/2-month layoff, Casson rallied outside from sixth to finish fourth at Gulfstream Park in the five-furlong Texas Glitter Stakes, which was moved from the turf to Tapeta. “I think he’s a nice horse – maybe better on turf, but seven furlongs should be good for him,” Casse said. Rafael Hernandez won the Victoria aboard Casson the only time he rode him, and has the mount Sunday. Fire and Wine is making his first start since taking the $250,000 Coronation Futurity for Canadian-breds in front-running style traveling 1 1/8 miles Nov. 29 under Slade Jones. He earned a big 86 Beyer Speed Figure. Trainer Zelijko Krcmar sent out Fire and Wine to work just twice this spring, including a three-eighths blowout in 35.40 seconds on the Tapeta under Jones on Wednesday Reload Raleigh won his second and third 2-year-old outings on the lead, including the seven-furlong Frost King Stakes for Ontario-sired stock. He wintered in South Carolina after a front-running second in the restricted Clarendon Stakes going three-quarters Nov. 23. Trainer Barbara Minshall said Reload Raleigh worked well last Sunday on the training track, breezing a half-mile in a bullet 47.20 under jockey Ryan Munger, who has the mount in the King Corrie. “We stalked horses,” Minshall said. “He did it the right way. We’ve been teaching him to sit and make a run, rather than be part of the pace. We’re hoping to be off the pace a little bit on Sunday. “Obviously, we need to see where he is going to fit long term – if he will be able to go two turns. He is out of an Awesome Again mare, so that does give me hope he will go two turns, but you never know until you do it.” Completing the field are Highwaytothemoon, Impulsive Bid, Learntodiscover, and the supplemented Rude Procedure. Highwaytothemoon defeated older allowance rivals going 5 1/2 furlongs on April 19 after a 5 1/2-month vacation. Impulsive Bid graduated at 11-1 on April 18 when debuting opening day after wintering at the Fair Grounds. Learntodiscover ships in from Turfway Park off a wide sixth in his first start of the year in the Cutler Bay Stakes on the Gulfstream turf course. The first-time Lasix user won a maiden race last June in Ireland before finishing third and fourth in a pair of group stakes there.
