OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Make Mischief has won seven races from 20 starts with three stakes victories and has banked $746,150 while racing exclusively on dirt. Friday, Make Mischief will make her turf debut in the $125,000 John Hettinger Stakes for New York-bred fillies and mares going 1 1/8 miles at Aqueduct. Make Mischief, trained by Mark Casse for Gary Barber, is a daughter of Into Mischief out of the Speightstown mare Speightful Lady. While Speightful Lady went 0 for 1 on turf, she has thrown four foals who were turf winners, including Speightful Kitten and Jody’s Song, who each won twice on the grass. “I’d like to at least give her a try at some point,” Casse said. “Her pedigree does say turf. It opens up some avenues for her. Gary Barber has never been afraid to step out of the box. War of Will had an all-turf pedigree.” War of Will, a horse Casse trained for Barber, began his career on turf, but won the Preakness on dirt before later capturing the Grade 1 Maker’s Mark Mile on turf. Casse worked Make Mischief over the Oklahoma turf course at Saratoga. Jockey Dylan Davis, aboard for that move, told Casse “She loved it,” the trainer said. :: DRF has you covered for the Belmont at the Big A meet! Make Mischief won the Yaddo by 8 1/2 lengths. Make Mischief, who breaks from post 2 under Davis, is the 126-pound highweight, spotting four pounds to her eight rivals. Chad Brown won this race four straight years, from 2016-2019, before having that streak broken last year (the race wasn’t run in 2020). Friday, he sends out Marvelous Maude, who returns to New York-bred company after a last-place finish in the Grade 2 Flower Bowl at Saratoga. The last time she faced New York-breds, Marvelous Maude won a second-level allowance by 3 1/2 lengths at the Hettinger distance of 1 1/8 miles. Ice Princess, trained by Danny Gargan, has finished second in 9 of 20 starts, including last year’s Hettinger when she was away awkwardly, clipped heels, and was last early before coming with a late run to fall three-quarters of a length short of Myhartblongstodady. She comes off a distant second to Make Mischief in the off-the-turf Yaddo. Jorge Abreu trained Myhartblongstodady, and on Friday will seek a second straight Hettinger with Runaway Rumour. After winning her first three starts, Runaway Rumour has lost her last 10, but did equal her career best Beyer Speed Figure (91) when second to Vigilantes Way in the Violet Stakes at Monmouth Park on Sept. 3. Trainer Christophe Clement sends out the uncoupled entry of Classic Lady and Classic Colors in the Hettinger. In her last two starts against statebreds, Classic Lady finshed second in the Mt. Vernon in May and won the Ticonderoga last November. Classic Colors is 3 for 5 versus statebreds, but has never competed in a stakes race. Finest Work, a winner of three of her last four, Vienna Code, and Pure Bode complete the field. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
