SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Bettors chasing the $158,820 pick six carryover on Wednesday at Saratoga are likely going to be relying heavily on trainer Mark Casse in the last two legs of the sequence. In race 8, the fifth leg of the wager, Casse sends out Disco Star, the potential favorite, in the $150,000 Statue of Liberty division of the New York Stallion Series scheduled for one mile on turf. In race 9, a 5 1/2-furlong maiden turf sprint, Casse will start two-time runner-up Delightful Darling against a large field of mostly first-time starters. Disco Star comes out of a second-place finish in the Suzie O’Cain Stakes for New York-breds here July 16 where she rallied from seventh in a nine-horse field to finish second, two lengths behind race favorite Mommy’s Turn, who is not back in this field because she is not by a New York-based stallion. Disco Star, who will have Dylan Davis back aboard, is only 1 for 8, her lone victory coming in a six-furlong maiden race at Aqueduct last October. She did finish third, beaten three-quarters of a length by Love Cervere, in the Take the A Train Stakes against open company in May. :: Get exclusive Saratoga Clocker Reports from Mike Welsch and the Clocker Team. This is a little easier group even though the [O’Cain] third-place finisher is in there.” Casse was referring to Boston’s Phinest, who was a stalking presence in the O’Cain before being outfinished by a head by Disco Star. Flavien Prat, who rode Boston’s Phinest last out, begins a three-day careless riding suspension on Wednesday, so Ricardo Santana Jr., the fourth-leading rider at the meet with 22 wins, has the call on Boston’s Phinest. The wild card in the field may be Hangover Heaven, who circled the field eight wide with an electric move to rally from last and win her debut going 5 1/2 furlongs here July 6. “Of everybody who watched that race I was the most surprised in the world,” winning trainer Rick Dutrow said. “She had trained like a regular girl, never had been on the grass in any kind of way. When she ran like that, we didn’t know that was going to happen.” Dutrow isn’t sure how Hangover Heaven will fare stretching out, but her mother, Diannestillworks, won her lone turf try and that was at 1 1/16 miles. Dutrow did say she has trained better coming out of the race. “I’m very interested in watching to see if she can, very interested,” Dutrow said. While Chad Brown won’t have Mommy’s Turn to send out in the Statue of Liberty, he will start Nonna Lynne, who is coming off a maiden win at 1 1/16 miles here July 26. Looking at the rest of the pick six sequence: Race 4: Many bettors could be singling Gun Party in this second-level allowance/optional $75,000 claimer going one mile. Gun Party is coming off a first-level allowance win June 28 at Churchill, making him one of three next-out winners from a June 6 allowance. Drake’s Passage has had prior success at Saratoga. Race 5: Breslau and Stolen Base make up a formidable entry for Jason Provenzano’s Flying P Stable in the $32,000 claiming event. Breslau, trained by Norm Casse, is dropping in class as is Stolen Base, trained by Bruce Levine, who won at this seven-furlong distance at Aqueduct. Ilkay Kantarmaci named Manny Franco on both Call Me Fast and Gun It, so only one may run. Kantarmaci said Call Me Fast, who drops from the $50,000 level and gets blinkers removed, will run. Race 6: Orie and Pazz the Soy Sauce, second and fourth, respectively in this same maiden $50,000 claimer sprinting on turf are the most logical ones to use. Pandemic Hero has a second and third in two previous tries sprinting on turf. Race 7: In the $17,500 claimer, She’s Complicated takes a significant class drop after getting used in speed duel and fading to last for $50,000 on Aug. 1. Melle Mel also drops in class and gets blinkers and Santana for Mel Giddings. Spirit of Ester didn’t have the smoothest of starts but then got a perfect trip behind dueling leaders when second at this level last out over a sealed track. Race 9: As mentioned, Delightful Darling lost her first two starts by a neck, on turf, and a nose on dirt. Fourteen entered for turf, but only 10 may run. Lexico, a firster trained by Whit Beckman, is a half-sister to four winners, including Flap Jack, who won the Arlington-Washington Futurity as maiden in his third start. R P Byrne goes out for lethal first-time trainer Wesley Ward. Blint Mischief, a daughter of Into Mischief trained by Will Walden and ridden by John Velazquez, also is intriguing. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
