Casse lands a sweep of Seagram Cup, Ontario Colleen

Julie Wright Paramount Prince in the Seagram Cup capped a sweep of Saturday’s stakes at Woodbine for trainer Mark Casse.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Trainer Mark Casse swept both stakes on Saturday at Woodbine with favored Paramount Prince in the Grade 2 Seagram Cup and longshot Time to Dazzle in the Grade 3 Ontario Colleen.

After breaking from the outside post in the eighth stall, Patrick Husbands put Paramount Prince on the point and they set moderate fractions in the 1 1/16-mile Seagram. Stanley House stalking in second and took a run at the leader at the three-eighths pole, before Paramount Prince drew off in the lane to prevail by 5 1/2 lengths in a time of 1:43.37.

Stanley House dug in late to beat out a closing Wicked Django for second. Palazzi, Journeyman, Volcanic, Public Sector, and County Final completed the order of finish.

“He’s having so much fun right now,” Husbands said. “He’s grown up. He’s getting bigger and bigger. He’s the type of horse, you have to [harness] his speed. He was playing with [Stanley House]. Every time that horse got closer, he [opened up]. It’s a pleasure riding good horses like him.”

Paramount Prince ($4.50) earned $126,000 of the $206,500 purse for the partnership of Gary Barber and Michael Langlois. Ericka Rusnak bred the son of Society’s Chairman, who won the 2023 King’s Plate and his last race in the Grade 3 Dominion Day.

Time to Dazzle ($24.70) opened up a substantial early lead under Sahin Civaci in the $137,270 Ontario Colleen and was never threatened en route to a 4 1/2-length score, in a time of 1:33.57 for a mile on the main turf.

Simply in Front came from mid-pack to finish second and Uphill Dance beat out Tripolina for third in the 12-horse field.

“I wasn’t expecting her to be on the lead, but she popped out really good,” Civaci said. “She was comfortable out there. The fractions were decent—we weren’t [going] slow by any means, but she was going easy and she held on.”

By elite sire Not This Time, Time to Dazzle collected $81,000 in her first added-money victory for owner Tracy Farmer.
