OCEANPORT, N.J. – The 3-year-old filly division has a new player, as Cassatt posted an impressive front-running victory Saturday in the Grade 3, $105,000 Monmouth Oaks. Making her stakes debut in her fourth start, Cassatt gave the husband-and-wife training team of Larry and Cindy Jones their fourth Monmouth Oaks victory. Cassatt extended her winning streak to three, beating one of the deeper recent Monmouth Oaks fields. Among her victims: Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Ria Antonia. There were several bumpy moments in the race, starting with the break. Cassatt bobbled slightly, recovering quickly under Kerwin Clark to settle into the strong, rhythmic gallop that carried her to victory. Down on the rail, Ria Antonia veered left coming out of the gate, forfeiting any chance for good early position. With no other filly keen for the lead, Clark let Cassatt roll. “I was surprised I was on the lead,” Clark said. “Looking at the Form before coming out, I thought two or three horses had a chance to be in front of me. When we got by the wire the first time, it didn’t seem like anybody wanted to go. I already had my filly in a nice stride, a nice, comfortable position. I just went on with it.” In Monmouth Park main-track stakes tradition, the lead is usually not a bad place to be. While Cassatt cruised along in the 2 and 3 path, Offlee Golden chased in second. The final turn was other bumpy point, as Aqua Regia, a 26-1 outsider, made her bid but in the process squeezed Saintly Joan into the rail, forcing jockey Orlando Bocachica to steady. Aqua Regia continued a strong inside run at the leader, but Cassatt responded to Clark’s right-handed encouragement. Cassatt pulled away in the lane, winning by 3 3/4 lengths. “I wasn’t too concerned,” Clark said. “I hadn’t asked her to do anything at that point. She actually noticed the horse on the inside before I did. The only thing I was concerned about was her getting a little bit tired, and she did. She’s a nice filly with a bright future.” Owner Rick Porter, who paid $300,000 for Cassatt in September 2012 at Keeneland, agreed. “Larry Jones has always been very high on this filly,” Porter said. “She’s a little bit of a head case, as you could see in the paddock. She sweated out completely. She’ll get better with some time as she matures. It’s a good starting place, and hopefully we have a lot of places to go.” There was no argument from Larry Jones. “I told everyone last year this might be the best 2-year-old I ever trained,” Jones said. “We’re tickled with this. We might be a little too late getting her to the Breeders’ Cup, but you never know. The [Grade 1 Cotillion Sept. 20 at Parx Racing] is a possibility to see if she can put herself in the Breeders’ Cup picture. We’ll see how she comes out and let her tell us.” Aqua Regia finished second but was disqualified to third, elevating 34-1 shot Saintly Joan into the place spot. Cassatt, the odds-on favorite in the initial mutual flashes, paid $5.40 to win as the 17-10 second choice. The time was 1:44.34 for the 1 1/16 miles on the fast track. Ria Antonia finished fourth as the 4-5 favorite. She finally shook loose after shuffling back to seventh. She angled three wide into the stretch but could not gain on Cassatt. “I just had no racing luck today,” said jockey Jake Radosevich. “I didn’t get the trip I was looking for. Sometimes that just happens.” Lady Paradime was fifth, followed by Aibhilin, Offlee Golden, and Spring Included. Size, the Iowa Oaks winner, and Joint Return were early scratches.
