For Cash gets perfect trip to win Fred Jones Handicap
For Cash had a perfect trip winning the $60,434 Fred Jones Handicap at Northlands Park on Saturday. He paid $9.30 as the second choice in the wagering behind Killin Me Smalls, who was very game while finishing second.
For Cash was ridden perfectly by leading rider Rico Walcott, who earlier on the card won the $50,000 Count Lathum with Blue Dancer.
Killin Me Smalls broke on top in the 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-olds and upward, and it was pretty clear jockey Ruben Lara didn’t want him to be on the lead. He was too sharp, though, and he set quick interior fractions of 22.40 seconds and 46.74 while under pressure from Tiz Awesome and Aces Again.
Walcott had For Cash sitting a few lengths off the early duel before giving him his cue approaching the quarter pole. For Cash immediately responded and collared Killin Me Smalls, who had disposed of Tiz Awesome and Aces Again. For Cash took over the lead on the stretch turn. Killin Me Smalls fought back, though, and wouldn’t go away.
For Cash eventually wore Killin Me Smalls down in late stretch and posted a final margin of one length. Deadly Truth rallied to finish a distant third.
The final time over a track rated good was 1:44.30.
For Cash is trained by Dale Greenwood.
