Cary Street was the 28-1 upset winner of the Grade 3, $200,000 Greenwood Cup on Monday at Parx Racing. The 1 1/2-mile marathon on the main track was a race dominated by inside moves. As expected, Abraham was the pacesetter, breaking from post 3 in the 10-horse field, with Irsaal applying early pressure. Abraham held the lead when Ever Rider, at 10-1, boldly brushed to the front with an inside surge five furlongs into the contest. Abraham, a winner of two straight in New York, battled back, but his tactical advantage was gone. Now it was Ever Rider calling the tune while Cary Street made his move up the fence as they rounded the final bend. After saving all possible ground under Miguel Mena, Cary Street prevailed by one length over Ever Ride at the end of a long drive. It was the fifth win and the first in a stakes for Cary Street, a 5-year-old gelded son of local legend Smarty Jones trained by Brendan Walsh for the ownership team of JBL Thoroughbreds and Walsh Racing. The victory was a dramatic move forward for Cary Street, who was racing in $10,000 claimers as recently as April 2013. Micromanage, the even-money favorite following an 8 1/2-length romp in the 1 3/4-mile Birdstone Stakes at Saratoga, was third. Micromanage was between rivals for most of the race and was forced to steady at the quarter pole. He finally angled clear but lacked a solid finishing kick. The time was 2:30.71, as Cary Street paid $59.80 to win. The time was well off the track record of 2:28.01 set by Redeemed in his 2012 Greenwood Cup victory. The Greenwood took on added significance this year with the decision by the Breeders’ Cup to eliminate the Marathon. The Greenwood is one of the few major stakes for older dirt runners who prefer 12 or more furlongs.
