Carter closing in on Quarter Horse mark
Jockey G.R. Carter will enter Thursday night’s Quarter Horse program at Remington Park on the verge of becoming the sport’s all-time leading rider by wins. He is seven from tying the mark of 3,631 held by the retired Alvin Brossette.
Carter, who already owns the sport’s earnings record, had won 3,624 races from 22,925 mounts through Monday, according to statistics provided by the American Quarter Horse Association. He has eight mounts on Thursday’s card, including This Snow Is Royal, a 25-time winner set to run in the third race at the Oklahoma City track.
Brossette achieved the record with 21,947 starters. He had career mount earnings of $24,017,059.
Carter has compiled career mount earnings of $64,927,657, according to the AQHA. He is a 46-year-old native of Pawhuska, Okla., and has been voted AQHA champion jockey 10 times dating back to 1993, according to the organization’s Richard Chamberlain.
Carter’s biggest wins include the All American Futurity with Falling In Loveagain in 1998 and Stolis Winner in 2008. He also won the All American Derby with Dashing Perfection in 1997 and two runnings of the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity, in 2002 with First Place Queen and in 2005 with Value The Man.
Closer to his Oklahoma City home, Carter is a 16-time title winner at Remington, where he has won five runnings of the prestigious Heritage Place Futurity.
