Carryover nearly $1 million

Brad Free|Sep 18, 2006

POMONA, Calif. - A massive pick six carryover of nearly $1 million is at stake Wednesday at Fairplex Park, where a string of longshot winners continued Monday and generated a triple carryover that is the highest in Los Angeles County Fair history.

Horseplayers wagered more than $1.2 million into the pick six on Monday, chasing a two-day carryover of $332,520. Most tickets were on the deck after the first two legs of the sequence - first-time starter Absolutly a Tizzy ($42.40) won race 6, followed by Wild Vegas ($34.80) in race 7.

The winners of races 8, 9 and 10 each returned $8.20 or less, and the pick six would not have carried if the favorite in the final leg would have won. However, odds-on Social Skywalker ran poorly in race 11, won by $21.80 Cot Ty. Pick six tickets with five of six winners Monday returned $40,158.60.

The carryover into Wednesday is $988,445.40. The track is dark on Tuesday.

The pick six Wednesday is on races 6 through 11. It is a baffling sequence.

Race 6 is a $5,000 claimer, non-winners of two, at six furlongs. The tepid 7-2 favorite is Scofield Honor, from post 10.

Race 7 is a $5,000 claimer for fillies and mares, non-winners of three, at six furlongs. The 2-1 favorite is Pearls 'n' Satin.

Race 8 is another restricted claimer, $8,000 for non-winners of two, at seven furlongs. Virgo Genius, who finished last in an open claimer 10 days earlier, is the 9-5 favorite.

Race 9 is a maiden-25 starter allowance at seven furlongs. Cat of Fifty Seven opens as the 2-1 favorite and will be a single on many tickets following a good fourth against tougher company at Del Mar.

Race 10 is the $65,000 Black Swan Stakes at a mile and a sixteenth for 2-year-old fillies. The grass filly Spenditallbaby is the 5-2 favorite returning to dirt; 8-1 longshot Bartok's Bling looms the upsetter in her second career start.

Race 11 is a $32,000 maiden-claimer to close out the sequence, and second-time starter Balance the Score is the 2-1 program favorite.
