LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Trainer David Carroll has been fined $1,000 by the Kentucky stewards for striking a horse in the head with his whip during a training exercise Kentucky Derby week. The incident was brought to light recently by the CBS television affiliate in Louisville.A reporter for WLKY-TV, John Boel, confronted Carroll with a news clip of the incident, after which Carroll apologized profusely.Chief steward John Veitch called the incident “out of character” for Carroll, who gallops some of his horses and currently has his main string of horses at Saratoga. “You can see the horse was trying to bolt and that David was just trying to keep her on a straight course,” said Veitch. “Still, striking a horse in the head is not acceptable.”Veitch said stewards have a year to make a ruling when such infractions are brought to their attention.
