Carpe Diem filly adds to sire's big day at third session of OBS breeze show
On the day that Carpe Diem, a high-profile graduate of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s juvenile sales program, recorded his first winner, another filly from his first crop recorded the bullet work during the third session of the under-tack preview for the company's spring sale of 2-year-olds in training.
A Carpe Diem filly worked a quarter mile in 20 3/5 seconds on Wednesday to record the day's fastest time at that distance on the Ocala Training Center's all-weather Safetrack surface. The filly, who is consigned by Wavertree Stables, as agent, is out of the winning Carson City mare Rebuke, a half-sister to stakes winner and stakes producer Summer Cruise.
Carpe Diem topped the 2014 OBS March sale when he sold for $1.6 million. The son of Giant's Causeway was a Grade 1 winner at 2, taking the Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland, and at 3, winning the Blue Grass Stakes. He retired to WinStar Farm, where he covered 163 mares in his first season at stud in 2016, according to The Jockey Club's Report of Mares Bred. His first starter from that crop, Nayibeth, became his first winner when she took a maiden special weight at Keeneland for trainer Wesley Ward, winning by four lengths.
Five juveniles shared the session's fastest furlong time, each breezing in 9 4/5 seconds. The group included a Quality Road filly who is from the immediate family of that stallion's Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile and Pegasus World Cup winner City of Light. The filly is consigned by de Meric Sales, as agent.
Also tied for the fastest time were a Speightstown full brother to Grade 1 winner Lighthouse Bay, consigned by Scanlon Training and Sales, agent for Excel Bloodstock; a filly from the first crop of Danza, consigned by Best A Luck Farm, agent; a filly from the first crop of Bayern and from the family of champion Vindication, consigned by Harris Training Center, agent; and a filly by Malibu Moon consigned by S G V Thoroughbreds, agent.

The under-tack show continues with an enlongated session on Thursday before going on hiatus Friday and Saturday, a schedule change made due to the forecast for poor weather in the Ocala area. The final session of the breeze show will now take place on Sunday, with the OBS April sale taking place April 23 through April 26.
