Carousel winner Edgeway pointing to Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint

Edgeway, the winner of the $250,000 Carousel Stakes for fillies and mares at Oaklawn Park on Saturday, will return to trainer John Sadler’s stable at Santa Anita this week. The Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Del Mar on Nov. 6 is a long-range goal for Edgeway, Sadler said.
How Edgeway will be campaigned this spring was not immediately clear Sunday morning, but Sadler downplayed a potential start in the Grade 1 Derby City Distaff at Churchill Downs on May 1. Sadler does have plans for a start at the Del Mar summer meeting, likely in the Grade 3 Rancho Bernardo Handicap for fillies and mares at 6 1/2 furlongs there Aug. 20.
“She’ll run at Del Mar, for sure,” he said. “She could travel again.”

Owned by Pete and Kosta Hronis, Edgeway has won 4 of 6 starts and has earned $307,200, slightly more than her $275,000 purchase price at a 2-year-olds in-training sale in 2019. Edgeway was the easy winner of her first start this year in an allowance race at Santa Anita in February.
In the six-runner Carousel, Edgeway was always near the front and took the lead on the turn. She led by a length with a furlong remaining and won by three-quarters of a length over favored Frank’s Rockette, a five-time stakes winner.
“That was a small field, but it was a good field,” Sadler said. “Frank’s Rockette is very good.”
