Carole Lombard closed from fifth of six in the final furlong to win Sunday’s $75,450 Campanile Stakes on turf for 3-year-old California-bred fillies at Golden Gate Fields, giving owner and breeder Nick Alexander his third stakes win of the weekend at the Northern California track.
Alexander’s Rose Maddox and Alice Marble won stakes on Saturday. Carole Lombard was trainer Phil D’Amato’s third stakes winner of the weekend at Golden Gate Fields. He won the Camilla Urso Stakes at five furlongs on turf with Alice Marble and the Grade 3 San Francisco Mile on turf with Balnikhov, both on Saturday. D’Amato also won two stakes at Santa Anita over the weekend.
Carole Lombard ($4.80) won the Campanile Stakes at a mile by a head over 4-1 Proof She Zips, who was second early and had a one-length lead in the stretch. Sell the Dream, the 6-5 favorite, closed from off the pace to finish third, beaten three lengths and a head.
Carole Lombard, who was ridden by Assael Espinoza, was timed in 1:37.97. She earned a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 76.
Rousing Jewel finished fourth, followed by Like No Other and Get My Point, who was eased through the stretch but was walked off the track.
Carole Lombard, a filly by Grazen, has won 3 of 6 starts. She was fifth of eight in the California Cup Oaks for statebred 3-year-old fillies at Santa Anita in January in her only previous stakes appearance, and won an allowance race for the same division at a mile on turf at Santa Anita on March 31.
In Sunday’s $77,250 Silky Sullivan Stakes for statebred 3-year-olds, the gelding Hacking It Up rallied through the final furlong to catch stretch leader Clovisconnection in the one-mile turf race.
Ridden by Evin Roman, Hacking It Up ($9.60) won by a half-length for his first stakes win. He was timed in 1:37.97 and earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 76, which equals his career-best.
Hacking It Up was fifth on the first turn, but dropped back to seventh on the turn while racing on the inside. Roman moved Hacking It Up between rivals entering the stretch and quickly closed ground on the leaders.
Clovisconnection (4-1) finished 1 1/4 lengths in front of Cousin Richie in the field of 10. Please Focus, the 2-1 favorite, set a solid pace of 22.90 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 47.57 for a half-mile. Please Focus led into the stretch, but was caught by Clovisconnection and faded to finish fifth.
Hacking It Up, by Nyquist, races for Qatar Racing and trainer George Papaprodromou. Hacking It Up has won 3 of 8 starts. He was fourth and fifth in two sprint stakes for statebred 2-year-olds at Del Mar last summer when trained by Doug O’Neill, and was transferred to Papaprodromou last fall.
Hacking It Up has won 2 of 4 starts for Papaprodromou, including his 2023 debut in an allowance race for 3-year-old statebred turf milers at Santa Anita on Feb. 5.
