Carlos Sixes goes for fifth win of 2020
Carlos Sixes will be looking for his fifth win on the year Tuesday, when he starts as the probable favorite in the featured eighth race at Lone Star Park.
“He’s a pretty cool horse,” said Karl Broberg, who owns and trains Carlos Sixes.
The eighth race is an optional $20,000 claiming route for 3-year-olds and up that carries first-level allowance conditions. The mile race has drawn a field of nine.
Carlos Sixes is 4 for 6 this year, opening his season with a win in a $16,000 conditioned claimer at 1 1/16 miles in February at Oaklawn. He was claimed out of the race by Broberg, who has since saddled Carlos Sixes to wins in a $12,500 starter allowance and optional $16,000 claimer – both at Oaklawn – and an optional $12,500 claimer on the main track at Lone Star Park.
“He’s been ultra-consistent,” Broberg said. “I actually want to see him get on the turf one of these days. In the back of my mind when I originally claimed him, I was thinking grass. He was running so well at Oaklawn, with the exception of the marathon race, I figured don’t try to fix what’s not broke.”

Carlos Sixes ran seventh in the Trail’s End starter allowance over 1 3/4 miles on the closing-day card May 2 at Oaklawn. One start later, he was back in the win column, romping by 9 3/4 lengths in the $12,500 optional claimer at a mile June 8 at Lone Star. Carlos Sixes earned a career-high Beyer Speed Figure of 87, which is the best last-race number in the field Tuesday.
“Huge speed figure against a very suspect bunch,” Broberg said. “It will be interesting to see if he duplicates it. I know a couple in there [Tuesday] last ran at Churchill. It’s tougher than it should be for” this level.
David Cabrera, who was aboard Carlos Sixes last out, again has the mount from post 6.
Lord Dragon and Paddy O’Dini both were winners last out at Churchill. The horses are coupled for owner M and M Racing. Ramon Dominguez has been named on both halves of the entry by trainer Robertino Diodoro.
The ninth race is a maiden special weight for 3-year-olds and up over 1 1/16 miles on turf, and the uniquely-marked Southern Phantom is entered for the main track only. The field includes Seattle Soul, who is a 3-year-old colt out of the multiple Grade 1-winning mare Raging Fever.
