Carlos L. considered for Remington Derby start
Group 1 winner Carlos L. is being debated for a start in the Grade 3, $400,000 Oklahoma Derby on Sept. 29 at Remington Park, according to trainer Jorge Navarro.
It would be the first start in North America for Carlos L., who is coming off a double-digit win over older rivals in a major race in Panama.
“Were going make a final decision at the end of the week,” Navarro said Wednesday. “We’re thinking about it, talking about it.
“We’re looking for the right spot to introduce him to American racing.”
Carlos L. is a new acquisition for the Good Friends Stable led by Rene Douglas. Navarro won the Grade 1 Forego for the partnership in 2015 with Private Zone.
Carlos L. won the Group 1 El Presidente de La Republica Cup by 13 3/4 lengths in his most recent out May 26. The start came over 1 5/16 miles at Remon racetrack in Panama. He also won a Group 2 race over seven furlongs at the same track in December. Carlos L. has been working sharply at Monmouth Park.
The Oklahoma Derby, which will be run over 1 1/8 miles, had a working list of 11 to 12 potential starters as of Wednesday. Remington stakes coordinator Don Thompson said that list includes Cairo Cat, Chess Chief, Extra Hope, Long Range Toddy, Mucho Gusto, Owendale, Tax, and View Magic.
Entries for the Oklahoma Derby will be taken Sept. 25. The race will share a card with seven other stakes on a special Sunday afternoon program. The other stakes include the Grade 3, $200,000 Remington Park Oaks and $150,000 David M. Vance Sprint.
