Carina Mia wins the Acorn
Barbara D. Livingston After winning the one-mile Acorn, Carina Mia will stretch out to 1 1/8 miles for the Coaching Club American Oaks on July 24.

ELMONT, N.Y. – The deepest barn on the East Coast – if not the country – just got a little deeper. Trainer Chad Brown now has Grade 1 winner Carina Mia and the Grade 2 stakes-placed 3-year-old filly Jamyson ‘n Ginger in his barn.

Carina Mia, the winner of the Grade 1 Acorn in 2016 and an earner of $1.1 million for trainer Bill Mott, was recently transferred to Brown by owner Three Chimneys Farm. Jamyson ‘n Ginger, second in last year’s Grade 2 Demoiselle, was recently purchased by Juddmonte Farms and moved from Rudy Rodriguez to Brown. Presumably, Jamyson ‘n Ginger was purchased as a broodmare prospect and likely will be bred to Juddmonte’s Arrogate next year.

“We’re pretty lucky – those are two very nice fillies,” Brown said on Friday. “Hopefully, we can do some good with them.”

Carina Mia, a daughter of Malibu Moon, has not won since the Acorn. However, three of her six losses in that span came to the champion Songbird. Last year, Carina Mia finished second to Songbird in the Coaching Club American Oaks and the Cotillion. Last month, Carina Mia finished fourth to Songbird in the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps at Belmont.

“I don’t have any plans for her yet,” Brown said of Carina Mia.

Carina Mia is better around one turn, so a race such as the Ballerina at Saratoga on Aug. 26 could be a target. Carina Mia finished third in that race last year. Also in the filly-and-mare sprint division, Brown has Paulassilverlining, the winner of the Grade 1 Madison and Grade 1 Humana Distaff since Juddmonte bought her and moved her to Brown. Paulassilverlining is pointing to the Grade 2 Honorable Miss at Saratoga on July 26 as a prep for the Ballerina.

Jamyson ‘n Ginger, a daughter of Bernardini, is nominated to the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks at Saratoga on July 23. Brown said that race is still a possibility. He planned to work Jamyson ‘n Ginger this weekend and decide whether to run her in the CCA Oaks or perhaps shorten her up to seven furlongs in the Grade 1 Test on Aug. 5.

At 2, Jamyson ‘n Ginger won a one-mile maiden race by 15 1/2 lengths in the slop. After running fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita, Jamyson ‘n Ginger finished second to Miss Sky Warrior in the Demoiselle at Aqueduct.

In her lone start this year, Jamyson ‘n Ginger finished second to Unchained Melody in a first-level allowance race at Belmont on June 1. Unchained Melody came out of that race to win the Grade 2 Mother Goose.
