Caribbean Cowboy holds off challenge to win Iowa Stallion Futurity
ALTOONA, Iowa – The favored Caribbean Cowboy ($4.80) knuckled down to his task when challenged at the eighth pole by Rich Uncle and pulled away for a 4 1/2-length win in Saturday evening's $96,131 Iowa Stallion Futurity.
After putting away fellow Iowa-bred and eventual fourth-place finisher Raegen Harper in a prolonged duel on the front end, Caribbean Cowboy responded strongly when roused by Glenn Corbett to deny the Oklahoma-bred Rich Uncle. Bad Moon rallied to snare third, 1 1/2 lengths behind Rich Uncle in the field of 12 juveniles.
Trained by Kelly Von Hemel for breeder-owner Ray Shattuck and his RPM Inc. syndicate, Caribbean Cowboy, now 2 for 2, dashed 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:05.11.
Caribbean Cowboy, a Petionville colt out of Shattuck's multiple Iowa-bred stakes-winning mare, Hollywood and Wine, earned $62,530 for his connections.
