Caren wins stakes debut in Shady Well

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Caren ($11.10) held off the 29-1 maiden Crumlin Spirit to notch her stakes debut Sunday at Woodbine in the $150,000 Shady Well.
Caren pressed the favored Get Rhythm through honest fractions in the 5 1/2-furlong sprint for 2-year-old fillies. Caren took control early in the stretch en route to a head victory in 1:04.33.
Crumlin Spirit finished a clear second over Conquest City Girl as Get Rhythm faded to fifth in the seven-horse field of Ontario-breds.
Jesse Campbell rode Caren, who collected $90,000 for owner Robert Marzilli and trainer Mike DePaulo.
“This filly has been very precocious, very smart from day 1,” Campbell said. “I’m able to ride her like an old horse. In these baby races, that goes a long way.”
Caren is unbeaten in two starts with earnings of $117,000.
