Careless Jewel will miss Shuvee

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Careless Jewel, who had been slated to make her seasonal bow in Saturday's one-mile Shuvee at Belmont, has an injury and will not be making the trip.

"The filly has some heat in one of her legs, off her last work," trainer Josie Carroll said Wednesday morning. "Until we check it out thoroughly, we're not comfortable running here."

Carroll will not venture an opinion on Careless Jewel's immediate or long-term future until the filly has been X-rayed and has undergone other tests.

Owned by the Donver Stable of Donna and Vern Dubinsky, Careless Jewel wintered at Palm Meadows with Carroll and had been training at Keeneland in preparation for the April 30 La Troienne. Bothered by a quarter crack, Careless Jewel was not entered there but had turned in two solid works since coming north to her Woodbine base, breezing five furlongs in 58.80 seconds on May 2 and six furlongs in 1:11.20 last Sunday.

Careless Jewel, a Kentucky-bred 4-year-old filly who was purchased at the Keeneland September yearling sale for $40,000, began her career last year and won five of her seven starts for earnings of more than $1 million.

Her major successes, all around two turns on the dirt, came in the Grade 1 Alabama at Saratoga, the Grade 2 Delaware Oaks at Delaware Park, and the Cotillion at Philadelphia Park.

In her last appearance, Careless Jewel set a hot pace but weakened to finish last of eight as the favorite in the 1 1/8-mile Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic at Santa Anita on Nov. 6.
