Cardinal Handicap attracts baker’s dozen
RACE REPLAY IS NOT AVAILABLE
Cash Control and Kitten’s Roar are the 119-pound co-highweights in the Grade 3, $100,000 Cardinal Handicap, which will be run at Churchill Downs on Saturday.
The Cardinal, for fillies and mares at 1 1/8 miles on turf, goes as the 10th of 11 races on a card that also includes the $80,000 Bet On Sunshine (race 9) for older sprinters.
From the hedge, this is the Cardinal field: Real Smart, Annulment, Complete St., Lady Fog Horn, Kitten’s Roar, The Tea Cups, Belle de Nuit, Christie’s Ready, Heath, Salama, Lots o’ Lex, Cash Control, and Bitty Kitty.
Six graded stakes will be run here next week, led by the Grade 1 Clark Handicap on Nov. 25. Gun Runner, who could be favored if he runs, is “a possibility” for the Clark, according to David Fiske, racing manager for Winchell Thoroughbreds.
Illussion Artist eyes stakes for Louisiana-breds
With three wins from as many career starts, all in open company, Illussion Artist figures to be tough against fellow Louisiana-breds when she makes her next start in the $100,000 Louisiana Champions Day Ladies Sprint on Dec. 10 at Fair Grounds.
Illussion Artist earned an 81 Beyer Speed Figure when she drew off to win a second-level allowance here last Sunday by 1 1/2 lengths. Brad Cox trains the 3-year-old Illussion Artist for Steve Landers.
