Ruidoso Downs

Card consists of eight All American Derby trials and four Oaks trials

Steve Andersen|Aug 19, 2022

Kj Desparado lost a seven-race winning streak with a neck loss at 3-5 to A Pollitical Candy V in the $645,329 Rainbow Derby at Ruidoso Downs on July 23.

Those two could be on course for a rematch in the All American Derby on Sept. 4, pending the results of time trials on Sunday. The runners with the 10 fastest times, regardless of finishing positions, advance to the final.

Kj Desparado will be a massive favorite in Sunday’s fifth race, the first of eight divisions of 440-yard trials for the All American Derby. Trained by Wes Giles, Kj Desparado has been one of the most prominent runners in the nation in the last year, winning the All American and Texas Classic futurities and the Ruidoso Derby in June.

A Pollitical Candy V will be a short price in the eighth race, attempting to extend his winning streak to four races. A Pollitical Candy V began the streak with a win in the Ruidoso Invitational, the consolation for the Ruidoso Derby, on June 11.

By the time A Pollitical Candy V starts in the fourth division of the All American Derby trials, several other leading runners from the last year will have raced.

Earlier on the program, Kj Desparado starts against Special Apollitical, who won the Sam Houston Derby in Texas on May 20.

The sixth race is led by Lethal Avenger, who was third in the Rainbow Derby, and Fdd Scout, who was second to Kj Desparado in the $3 million All American Futurity last September.

Jess Savin Candy, the winner of the Ruidoso and Rainbow futurities in 2021, will start in the seventh race. He will be attempting to reverse comprehensive losses in trials for the Ruidoso and Rainbow derbys earlier this year.

There is likely to be qualifiers from the final four races.

The ninth race is led by Muy Peligrosito, who was second in the Ruidoso Derby, and A Tres of Eagle, who was second in the Rainbow Invitational, the consolation of the Rainbow Derby.

The 10th race did not draw a strong field, but does include Smoky Ice, who was second in the Dash for Cash Futurity at Lone Star Park last September.

The final two trials are much stronger. Bomb Cyclone, the impressive winner of the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity last December, has his first start of the year in the 11th race against Dreamsville, the winner of the Remington Park Oklahoma-bred Derby in April.

Significant Dynasty, second in the Golden State Million Futurity at Los Alamitos last November but only ninth in the Rainbow Derby, starts in the 12th race. He will race against Mr Apollo Jess, who has not raced since he finished fifth in the Ruidoso Derby after a slow start on June 11.

All American Oaks trials

The first four races on Sunday’s program at Ruidoso Downs are time trials for the All American Oaks for 3-year-old fillies at 440 yards on Sept. 4.

Lil Bit a Candy, who starts in the second race, and Lil Longmire, who runs in the third race, were supplemented for $25,000 last weekend.

Lil Bit a Candy was a troubled fifth behind Miss Beth Dutton in the Rainbow Oaks on July 23. Lil Longmire won the Firecracker Derby at Delta Downs July 8 and was second to Political Rose in the Heritage Place Oaks at Remington Park on May 28.

Political Rose, unraced since the Heritage Place Oaks, starts in the third race, a field that includes Vytaliti, who was third in the Rainbow Oaks.

Miss Beth Dutton and Kiss the Cartel, second in the Rainbow Oaks, lead the field for the fourth race.
