Caracortado eyes Preakness start

Steve Andersen|May 02, 2010

Caracortado, winner of the Grade 2 Robert Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita in February, is a likely starter for the Preakness, trainer Mike Machowsky said Sunday.

A winner of 5 of 7 starts and $262,200, Caracortado worked five furlongs in 59.40 seconds at Santa Anita on Saturday. Machowsky said a workout next weekend, and developments with the potential Preakness field in coming days, will determine whether Caracortado is sent to Baltimore.

"We'll see how it shapes up," Machowsky said. "He worked really well. He galloped out seven furlongs in [1:26.80]. Next week, I'll work him."

Caracortado was a troubled fourth in the Santa Anita Derby on April 3 in his last start.
