On a list that includes Chad Brown and Bob Baffert, trainer Gary Capuano stands apart. The Mid-Atlantic horseman is currently enjoying a stellar campaign with juveniles, winning 18 of 44 races with 17 horses. His 41 percent strike rate with 2-year-olds is the highest in the country among trainers with at least 40 starts. “I pinch myself most of the days just thinking, ‘When’s it going to stop?’ ” Capuano said. “But these horses are really doing well and we’re finding some good spots, and things have just been working out for us. We’ll ride the wave as long as we can.” There are countless ways to quantify Capuano’s success in 2025, a continuation of several successful seasons with smaller crops. To this point, he has more juvenile wins than starters, and those 18 victories tie him with both Baffert and Brown, who reached the same number in 67 and 104 races, respectively. In terms of pure rate of success, West Coast trainer John Sadler is Capuano’s only contemporary, striking at 40 percent in 42 starts. But Capuano isn’t making comparisons, nor is he trying to make too much sense of it. “I’ve just been fortunate enough to get my hands on some decent horses, and we’re just trying to make the best of what we have,” Capuano said. “The last couple years have really been good, but we’ve been pretty lucky with most of the 2-year-olds.” :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Repeat winners like stakes victors Probably Dreaming, Big Cuddle, and Doc’s Miracle have helped Capuano along, but his record has reached meteoric heights through near-universal success. Of his 17 starters, all but three have earned their maiden victory. Apprentice jockey Yedsit Hazlewood, currently the leading rider at Laurel, has been aboard nearly all of them and boasts a 45 percent winning percentage with Capuano in 2025. The trainer is far from done with his 2-year-olds at Laurel, as he will enter four in races this weekend. Worker Bee and the maiden Juniper’s Jubilee will run on Friday, while third-time starters Wild Warrior and Hollywood Import are entered in a starter allowance on Sunday. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
