Captain Serious to try open company in Dwyer

ELMONT, N.Y. - After winning three sprint races against New York-breds, Captain Serious will step out of his comfort zone in both company and distance when he runs in the Grade 3, $200,000 Dwyer Stakes at 1 1/16 miles on July 5.
Captain Serious, a son of Successful Appeal, is coming off a three-length victory in the Mike Lee Stakes going seven furlongs here May 31. He covered the distance in 1:20.99 and earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 97. Prior to that, Captain Serious had won a pair of six-furlong races, both by 1 1/4 lengths.
“We’re looking to hopefully develop a nice horse,” said Mike Hushion, who trains Captain Serious for owner Barry Schwartz. “You got to take a step forward.”
Hushion noted that Captain Serious doesn’t necessarily have a pedigree to get a distance of ground, but “he’s got a good demeanor,” he said. “Who knows what part of pedigree is going to jump out? We got to find out.”
Romansh likely to Suburban
Romansh, who ran a solid third to Palace Malice in the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap last Saturday, most likely will make his next start in the Grade 2, $500,000 Suburban here on July 5, trainer Tom Albertrani said.
In the Met Mile, Romansh was making his first start since winning the Grade 3 Excelsior. He pressed the pace three wide, missing second by a half-length while finishing nearly four lengths clear of the rest of the field.
“Good effort, he ran well,” Albertrani said. “He’d probably like to go a little further. We’ll see how he comes out of it, but we’ll probably look at the Suburban.”
The Suburban is run at 1 1/4 miles.
