Caps and Carnage continues road show, heads to Arapahoe Park for Gold Rush

Caps and Carnage, an undefeated 2-year-old California-bred gelding with three stakes wins in as many states, will be strongly favored to win $50,000 Gold Rush Futurity at Arapahoe Park in Colorado on Sunday, Aug. 16.

Trained by Dru Hall for Candice Davis of Utah, Caps and Carnage drew the inside post in a field of 11 in the six-furlong Gold Rush.

Hall said over the weekend that he and Davis discussed sending Caps and Carnage to California for the $100,000 I’m Smokin Stakes for statebred 2-year-olds at six furlongs at Del Mar on Sept. 7, but opted against the trip.

Caps and Carnage must be supplemented to the Golden State Series for California-breds for a one-time fee of $25,000 to be eligible to start in statebred stakes such as the I’m Smokin Stakes for the remainder of his career.

Purchased for $2,500 at the Arizona Thoroughbred Breeders Association’s yearling sale last October, Caps and Carnage has won four starts and earned $83,385.

Caps and Carnage won his first start in a trial for the Turf Paradise Open Spring Futurity at 4 1/2 furlongs by 10 3/4 lengths on April 8, and the $46,850 final at five furlongs by 1 1/2 lengths on May 2.

Caps and Carnage led throughout the $40,000 Sue Wallis Memorial Futurity at five furlongs at Wyoming Downs on June 28, winning by 19 3/4 lengths at 1-5. In the $49,500 King County Express Stakes at Emerald Downs in Washington state on July 19, Caps and Carnage again set the pace and won by 4 3/4 lengths at 3-5.

“It’s been a fun little ride,” Hall said.

Caps and Carnage, by the Discreet Cat stallion Dads Caps, is one of two stakes winners in the Gold Rush field along with Stop the Bills, who led throughout the $43,740 Colorado Thoroughbred Breeders Association Futurity for statebreds at 5 1/2 furlongs at Arapahoe Park on July 25.
