Capitan Jimbob stands out in Harrah's Futurity field
Louisiana Downs will close its Quarter Horse meet Wednesday with the Grade 3, $233,578 Harrah’s Futurity.
The race, for 2-year-olds at 300 yards, is the second-richest of the stand. The $271,463 Mardi Gras Futurity was won in an upset by Blue Eyed Fance last Saturday.
Capitan Jimbob figures to be a strong favorite in the Harrah’s Futurity after a dominant trial win March 4. He rolled by 1 1/4 lengths in his 300-yard heat while setting the fastest qualifying time of 15.67 seconds.
The next-best time in the trials was 15.74, set by the filly Together to the End. She won by 1 3/4 lengths for trainer Jose Sanchez. Wendy Garcia trains Capitan Jimbob. Both horses were making their career debuts in the trials, as were the other eight making up the 10-horse Harrah’s Futurity.
The high-percentage team of Bobby Cox and trainer Kenneth Roberts will have two starters in the Harrah’s Futurity. Aguila finished second to Capitan Jimbob in her trial as the 4-5 favorite. Aguila will break from the rail, while her stablemate Emnent starts from post 8 off a head win in his trial, covering the distance in 15.91.
Last year, Duponte won the Harrah’s Futurity before eventually capturing the Grade 1, $1 million Heritage Place Futurity at Remington Park.
Louisiana Downs opens its Thoroughbred season May 6, with the meet to run 84 dates through Sept. 27.
