Capilano Canyon enjoys smooth sailing in Ascot Graduation
VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Capilano Canyon had a perfect trip in winning the $75,000 Ascot Graduation at Hastings Monday. He paid $8.40 for his 2 1/2-length win over Baktura in the 1 1/16-mile race for 2-year-olds.
Confidentially ridden by Jose Asencio, Capilano Canyon was in a stalking position while Baktura, At Attention, and Turntheclocktozero dueled through a half-mile in 48.13 seconds. He moved into serious contention at the quarter pole, went three wide while making a strong move on the stretch turn, collared Baktura at the top of the stretch, and drew off to win decisively. Baktura held on well to finish 6 3/4 lengths clear of Synergy, who rallied late to finish third.
The final time was 1:45.41.
“I had a lot horse and I was full of confidence at the quarter pole,” said Asencio. “When I asked him, he responded.”
The British Columbia-bred son of Abraaj is trained by David Forster. He races for Karl Chan, Forster Stable, and Cameron Hill.
